happy new year everyone! i went for drinks at a bar next to work with work people - there was a really good bluesy rock covers band playing, and it snowed a lot also. all the other bars in town had $50+ cover charges which is ridiculous, but typically whistler expensive.
i've been working the last 7 days! shock to the system after a holiday and my cruisey academic job :) actually it wouldn't be so bad but (a) its the busiest time of year so its flat out, (b) i kinda got thrown in the deep end because of this - didn't get proper training or anything, and (c) i'm staying at a crappy hostel without proper bedding, that is sometimes cold at night and has noisy residents, and hence have a serious sleep deficit. last night was especially entertaining as the fire alarm went off at 1am and people were running around trying to figure out if it was a real fire (it turned out not to be) and how to turn the damn alarm off...
got a day off tomorrow and might take the opportunity to move to the more expensive but orders-of-magnitude-nicer hostel accross the road now that it isn't booked out. still waiting for staff housing, moved from #35 to #18 on the list in the last week or so. there is a staff party at a bar tomo night, free drinks i believe so that should be quite good.

35 to 18 in one week? Lets see now: 34 people ahead of you last week, 17 this week. If we assume this trend continues and the number of people ahead of you halves every week, you should get to the front, ummm, never. Damn Zeno and his stupid paradox.

Happy New Year G! Ours could not have been more different than yours. Hilarious New Year at Great Barrier Island with Tom and friends. We walked for 15 minutes on a metal country road in a pitch black balmy night to get to Medlands beach for the countdown. We only had 3 matches to light some fireworks and it was a windy night. 2 matches failed off coures. Thank god for 80 sparklers which kept things going. Despite drinking rather solidly that evening I stayed rather sober. The plus side was no hangover and spending the 1st day of the year at the best beach in the world. Hope you are keeping warm and getting some sleep!
