zion canyon and vegas!
spent the morning of my birthday hiking in zion national park and the evening playing pokies in las vegas! zion was really cool - basically you drive into a canyon, set up camp and take off on some hiking trails. its more accessible than the grand canyonfor walking etc. the landscape around the whole of the south west is just amazing - canyons, deserts, mountains etc. nothing like that in new zealand (or probably europe either i think).
went to vegas more or less on a whim. seemed like a cool way to spend my birthday. walked around the strip - its totally over the top but fun for short periods! lost only modest amounts of money on slot machines in our hotel casino.
next stop yosemite, will be back in seattle in only about 3 days now...

Zion national park is just gorgeous. I went camping there eight years ago, and was completely awed by the beauty of the place. Though I found Bryce Canyon national park even better.
